“My experience with airline food is mixed. While it’s nice to have, it’s not a decisive factor for me as a savvy traveler. Even the best lunch box remains just that regardless of class or ticket price. I prefer enjoying a local meal before the flight, maybe carrying some favorite snacks on board, and relishing a proper lunch at the destination (preferably local food and drinks!).

I’ve observed a decline, especially post-pandemic. Many airlines, facing survival challenges, revised cost structures, including cutting costs on food.

There’s a trend of separating meals from ticket prices, especially in low-cost airlines. One of the best dining experiences was with Etihad on a pre-pandemic business trip from Hong Kong to Europe (in economy, not business class). The food was delicious, an Asian fusion, and the attention to detail in the presentation was commendable.

Details matter, and some airlines claiming ‘premium’ status sometimes lack attention to these details, potentially spoiling the overall impression. Personally, I haven’t faced significant challenges, I am not too picky with airline food haha. But I understand those with dietary limitations (like vegans, kosher, etc.) or allergies may find options limited.

As a fan of fresh, authentic food, I’d prefer a meal at a local restaurant at the destination over any pre-cooked food (even with premium ingredients) on the plane,

In general, my best dining experiences were with Asian airlines (Etihad, Qatar, Turkish, Cathay). It seems Western airlines (European or North American) don’t pay the same attention to this aspect of the travel experience. Finally, I think that to improve transparency on ingredients and allergens, increase options for dietary preferences, and a focus on sustainable, locally sourced ingredients would be great”.
