Itinéraire
Notre Mixquic Dia de Muertos Tour begins as we board a comfortable vehicle and set off for San Andrés Mixquic, a small, historic village located in the Tláhuac Delegation of Mexico City. This village is renowned for its authentic and deeply rooted Dia de Muertos traditions, and it is here that we begin our exploration of one of the most important cultural celebrations in Mexico.
Upon arrival, we will visit the historic center of San Andrés Mixquic, where the streets are adorned with colorful decorations, including marigolds, papel picado (cut-paper decorations), and candles. As we stroll through the decorated streets, your guide will share the origins of Dia de Muertos. You’ll learn that this celebration is rooted in Aztec culture, where the living would honor their loved ones with food, flowers, and prayers. The ancient Aztecs believed that death was not the end but part of a natural cycle, and their practices have influenced modern-day observance.
One of the highlights of our Mixquic Dia de Muertos is visiting the San Andrés Apostol Church, which serves as a focal point of the village’s celebration. Inside the church and throughout the surrounding area, we’ll witness a variety of altars—or ofrendas—each dedicated to honoring departed family members. These altars are meticulously prepared with offerings such as photographs, favorite foods, candles, and sugar skulls. Each of these altars is unique, reflecting the personal rituals and traditions of the family, and your guide will explain the meaning behind each offering, revealing the deep spiritual connection that families maintain with their ancestors.
